Welcome to the 2009-2010 MJS Band Program!
BEHAVIOR
Be in your seats 90 seconds after the bell rings
When Mr. Sabatino stands on the podium no talking and excess playing
If you have a question please raise your hand and wait to be called on
Do not play an instrument that is not yours
Do not play the percussion unless you are a percussion player in band
GRADES
Since band is an academic class students are given a letter grade
The Breakdown is simple:
20 points lesson performance
20 points signed practice charts
45 points band performace / BEHAVIOR
15 points playing / written exams
Bonus Credit: Attending a live instrumental musical performance
Auditioning for regional band
Participating in Morris Union Jointure Bands
Minus Credit: Late to band without an excuse
Continuous talking in class
Not prepared with instrument, folder, and pencil
Leaving your instrument or folder out
Note to parents: Your child should bring home a practice chart each week for you to sign, Thank you in advance for your cooperation. The music department recommendation is to have students practice an average of 120 minutes per week. Most students practice 20 minutes over the course of six days.
Individual practice is the foundation for success in music.
HONORS BANDS
1. Region Band - This is an ensemble that students may audition for . Each student must play a prepared solo, a series of scales, and a short sight-reading example. This is for advanced students. Solos are available now either see me or go to www.njsma.com I will be recommending advanced students to audition for this.
2. Morris Union Jointure Commission Honors Bands - These ensembles rehearse in April and May for a festival in June. Students are recommended by directors, there are no auditions. Students participate from eleven different school districts!
MJS JAZZ
There are two Jazz groups for the 2009 - '10 school year
Jazz Ensemble will meet every Tuesday morning from 7:05am till 7:45am
Jazz Band will meet at a time tba from 7:05am till 7:45am
Parents: each student involved will already know which group they are placed in.

MR. SABATINO'S BACKGROUND
Leonardo Sabatino has earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, tenor trombone emphasis, from Rutgers: Mason Gross School of the Arts. Mr. Sabatino has student taught in the Scotch Plains Fanwood school district. In addition to teaching in Madison, Mr. Sabatino teaches private lessons on all low-brass instruments, and continues to help the Scotch Plains Fanwood music department.
