October 27, 2017
It's hard to believe November begins next week! Our Halloween parade will begin at 2:15 P.M. on Tuesday, October 31st. All families are invited to attend. Please proceed directly to the playground area. The MHS Marching Dodgers will kick off the parade and perform in the center of the field. Please stand on the perimeter of the field and keep the paths clear for the students.
Just a few Halloween reminders.....Those students choosing to dress up are encouraged to come to school in costume to enjoy the day. Costumes should be school appropriate (e.g. no midriff baring, low cut) and all hair and makeup preparation should be done prior to school. If a costume is bulky or itchy, please have your child wear clothing underneath, so that the costume can be removed easily. Students who choose to dress in costume may not bring any item to school that depicts violence such as plastic or fake weapons (swords, guns, knives, pitchforks, etc.), bloody or gory masks, or any sharp objects. Due to supervisory constraints, we cannot allow students to change into costumes during lunch periods.
If you choose to pick up your child at lunch to go home and change, the recess/lunch schedule is as follows:
KWRAP: 11:25 A.M. - 12:25 P.M.
Grades 3 & 4: 11:20 A.M. - 12:10 P.M.
Grades 1, 2, & 5: 11:55 A.M. - 12:45 P.M.
Please sign your child out at the start of the period and return to school by the end of the period.
National Education Week will be recognized the week of November 13th through 18th. We invite you to celebrate education with us and attend an open house here at TJS. Classroom observations will be conducted on Wednesday, November 15th and Thursday, November 16th. Drop in during one of the scheduled times and observe your child's classroom in action! Please note that these visitations are for parents only, no younger siblings will be permitted to attend. This year, visitations will enable you to get a glimpse into the daily operations of the school and observe your child in the classroom setting. In contrast to last year, we will not give you a specific time block to attend, but rather a window of time during which you can drop by. Teacher prepared lessons will not require parental participation, as attendance is optional. You'll also have the opportunity to attend a 'special' if one is occurring during the specified time block. The suggested visitation period is approximately 20 minutes. The schedule is as follows:
Wednesday, November 15th: Grades K-2, 9:00 - 10:00 A.M. and Grades 3-5, 10:00 - 11:00 A.M.
Thursday, November 16th: Grades 3-5, 1:00 - 2:00 P.M. and Grades K-2, 2:00 - 3:00 P.M.
Instructional Corner: Breakout EDU
I love it when education is engaging and FUN! I had the best time today with Ms. Zourzoukis's fifth grade class today while they participated in a "Breakout EDU" game. Ms. Z. designed a series of clues for the students to solve in order to eventually open up a locked box. Each clue required teamwork, critical thinking, and application of recently learned math concepts in a variety of contexts. Ms. Z. facilitated (and created) the experience by designing a video to capture the students' attention, pushed out through Google classroom, and set the stage for the 'mission' of the students. Clues were hidden throughout the room and one clue led to the next. The students worked together as one collaborative team. Each student had a role and made contributions to the process and end product. The students had 45 minutes to unlock the box and claim their treasure. 5Z was able to successfully meet the requirements of the challenge and found party favors and noisemakers in the box! While Ms. Z may have regretted filling the box with those items, it was worth the enthusiasm of the students. This endeavor was sponsored through a PTO grant. We appreciate your partnership!
No Place for Hate:
