    Instructional Corner: Health and Wellness
Health and wellness are two very important components of education, particularly at the elementary level.  Just like adults, students need breaks throughout the day.  Classroom teachers conduct daily meetings as part of a responsive classroom model to build respectful relationships and foster a team environment.  Students also participate in brain breaks throughout the day.  Many classrooms are equipped with sensory and calming corners, standing desks, noodle chairs, as well as other adaptive furniture and accommodations to provide outlets for students to re-energize and stay focused on tasks.  TJS is fortunate that all students receive instruction in physical education twice each week.  Mr. Gerenstein works hard to promote a positive environment where health, physical fitness, and "sports-person-ship," as he calls it, are a part of all activities.   Students regularly encourage and congratulate each other in phys ed class.  In order to make the most out of his time with his students, they all participate in a "workout" at the start of class prior to focusing on more targeted skills.  He works with students to set personal goals or improvement plans, while focusing on coordination, balance, strength, and motor skills.  The functional skills students acquire translate to everyday life and can be applied far beyond the elementary years.  The students meet with great success, largely in part to the scaffolded instruction they receive, while also learning the power of perseverance.  The kids certainly make it all look easy.  I'm still trying to figure out how to spin a plate and perform some of the other complicated tasks they seem to do so effortlessly!

The deadline to pre-order James Preller books for our author visit this year is FEBRUARY 23!! All of the information can be found on the PTO page here. The author will be visiting school on Tuesday, March 13th! James Preller is a children’s book author who has written over 80 book titles with a range from kindergarten to middle school. To help the children gain more from the author visit, we ask that you look over James Preller’s attached biography and list of books with your kids. You can also visit the author scholastic website for more information about the author. The PTO will be conducting a sale of his books before and after his visit. We will be in the Jaguar Jungle in February with samples of his books as well.
To further foster our school's on-going campaign for kindness and anti-bullying, we are offering for sale kids' t-shirts that spread the message that Kindness is Cool.  In conjunction with the t-shirt sale, there will be a kindness spirit day wherein kids are encouraged to wear blue and seek out the infinite ways to spread kindness in our school and community.  On that day, we ask kids to carry out one random act of kindness to a fellow classmate and hopefully the t-shirt's mantra that KINDNESS IS COOL will come to life. T-shirt orders are due in by February 27th, and shirts will arrive approximately April 1st. For more info and to order shirts, click here.
Our next General PTO Meeting will take place on March 8 at 11:30 am in the TJS Art Room. Our new Director of Curriculum, Mr. Dan Ross and our new Director of Special Services, Dr. Frank Santora will be joining us to get to know the TJS parent community and to share with us some of their ideas and plans for the future of Madison Schools! We hope that you will join us.
Please join us for DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) on Friday, March 9 at 8 am in the Jaguar Jungle. Enjoy a cup of coffee and a book with your kiddos before school during TJS’s Read Across America week!
