• LIFE SKILLS MATH

     Functional Math skills include telling time, counting and using money, balancing a checkbook, measurement and understanding volume.

    This class will teach students number recognition and then recognizing place values, tens ones and hundreds.  

    They will learn to skip count by 5's and 10's to 100.  This is important for undrstanding time and money.

    In addition to addition and subtraction, multiplication and division will be introduced.  

    We will use calculators to balance bank statements and pay bills.

    Understanding time is very important in order to be able to get to appointments on time, have enough time to get ready, and get to a bus, movie, school, etc. on time.  

    Tellilng time and understanding time will be paired, ie. 6a.m. is when you get up and 6 p.m. is whan you have dinner.  

    We will learn money skills such as banking, paying bills, eating out, going to a supermarket,  and saving money.  We will practice counting money, understanding the value of money, budgets and understanding wages and paying bills.

    We will learn to use a ruler and tape measure for length.  We will practice with inches, half inches and quarter inches, plus feet and yards.

    Measures of volume will be used for cups, quarts, gallons, etc. It is useful for fillilng tubs, cooking and following directions.  We will pratice finding and reading recipes depending on what they will want to cook.
