• Thank you for attending Back-to-School Night on Wednesday.  It was great seeing you, and I hope you found your visits with the teachers enjoyable and informative.

The TJS Learning Garden is complete and all students will receive an introduction, tour, and overview of how to maintain the garden next week.  Numerous interdisciplinary connections will be made and the students will be able to benefit from hands-on learning experiences throughout the entire year.  Be sure to ask your children about their experience and THANK YOU to Maureen Philipps for providing her time and expertise for this endeavor.

Don't forget tonight's PTO adult social!  You can buy tickets at the door, if you haven't done so already.

There is still time to sign up for the Playwrights or Chess Club.  Please see the attached registration forms for more details.

You'll also find an attachment from PPEC.  Visit their website to learn more.

    Instructional Corner:
While I could highlight the myriad of instructional practices happening in our building this week, I wanted to share this story, if you haven't seen it.  It's no secret that social-emotional learning is directly tied to academic achievement.  A primary school goal at TJS this year is to increase our SEL offerings.  I'm always looking for inspiration on ways to do this and this story never gets old.   This went viral awhile ago, and it was highlighted on NJ.com again today.   The principal, Akbar Cook, could have continued to discipline students for bullying and impose punitive measures, hoping the problem would just go away.  Instead, he thought "outside-of-the-box" and created a systemic support to provide meaningful change for students in need.  It's pretty awesome.  I hope I can meet him one day.  I'm also reminded that we can learn a lot from others and sometimes in an unlikely place.  Check it out https://www.nj.com/essex/index.ssf/2018/09/from_newark_to_cali_west_side_hs_principal_is_a_hi.html

    Guidance Update:
It is with great pleasure and excitement that I introduce myself.  My name is Judy Bletcher and I am the new, full-time school counselor at Torey J.  This is my first year serving as your school counselor, but my twelfth year in the district.  I have had the pleasure of getting to know many of you and your children, as a fourth, fifth and sixth grade teacher in this fine school.  My role as your school counselor is to support your child in his/her social and emotional development. I am here as a resource for each of your children and for you as well. Please never hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

To give you all a sense of my ‘big picture’ vision, I am excited to roll-out a comprehensive school counseling program here at Torey J.  Using current school climate data gathered from our student body, I have been able to identify and target specific social and emotional concerns that exist in our school. This week I had the pleasure of teaching about what friendship ”looks like” and “sounds like” in our first grade classrooms. I am excited to be teaching lessons across all grade levels throughout the school year.  Getting to know all of the students in this school is one of my personal goals. As the year goes on, I will share more details about Torey J’s new counseling program. I will also include ways students can sign-up for a variety of fun activities and initiatives. Wishing you all a fun and happy weekend!
