It was a busy week at TJS! The cold weather did not slow down the completion of "TJS Gives Back" or the "Souper Bowl." The generosity of this community is awe inspiring and on behalf of the entire faculty and staff, we thank you for your contributions. The school wide total of food items that will be donated to the Interfaith Food Pantry is 7,606! Check out the pictures - the stage was completely filled with food. The winning class is the 4S Bears with 1,176 items. The 3D Saints were second place and 4L Patriots were third. I thought the Saints were going to take it. There seems to have been some pass interference towards the end. We have all won in the process, learned about the value of giving back to the community, and certainly many local families stand to benefit from these efforts. It was nice to see some of you at the PTO meeting this week. If you didn't want to brave the cold to attend, there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved in the near future. Most notably, the adult social is around the corner on Saturday, March 9th at 7:30 P.M. More information will follow shortly and the PTO will need volunteers to help organize this fun event that benefits our students. Be on the lookout for future communications from them regarding the adult social and other events coming up in the second half of the school year.On an instructional note, I wanted to share this article. We often talk about the amount of "screen time" in school. At TJS, our faculty implements a healthy balance and the vast majority of texts students interact with are print. This article speaks more to technology as a whole and most importantly, to student voice and agency in learning. Education is never static and we need to focus on innovative ways to support our students.Guidance Update:
Thank you for the incredibly generous donations to “TJS Gives Back.” Because of you, the Torey J. community was able to donate 350 lunches to BRIDGES this week. Our student body raised over $260 to purchase the protein items for each lunch and students spent time and creativity decorating lunch bags. I cannot thank our students enough for doing an amazing job bagging lunches and the PTO for both their volunteerism and financial support. My hope is that it was a memorable, enriching experience for all.I am especially excited to revisit the use of the TJS Buddy Bench in the coming weeks. Some of you may have noticed that it has a fresh spot on the woodchip playground closest to our school. I’ll be working with all first and second graders to review both the purpose of the bench and to model and practice Buddy Bench expectations.
