• A snow day, the 100th day of school, and Valentine's Day made for a busy week!  Just a reminder, all Madison schools are closed Monday, February 18th and Tuesday, February 19th for mid-winter recess.  We will reopen on Wednesday, February 20th.

Today, during the lunch periods, students were treated to a preview of books by author, Matt de la Pena.  He will be visiting TJS on March 11th and personally sign all pre-ordered books.  For more information, see the PTO section of the email and the attachment.

The snow, sleet, and rain have made for a very soggy playground!  We will continue to go outside for recess, weather permitting.  You may want to send your child in old sneakers or with boots/change of socks for recess periods.

    Counseling Update:

A topic that seems to come up again and again in the world of school counseling is the rise in student stress and anxiety.  According to Child Mind Institute’s 2018 Children’s Mental Health Report, in the past 10 years, there has been increasing recognition of anxiety in young people, with a 17% increase in anxiety disorder diagnoses.  The most common diagnosis being generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which is characterized as feeling anxious or worried about about a wide variety of things on most days over a period of six months or longer. While our staff does an amazing job of building in break-time, mindfulness, movement activities and other stress-busters, some of our more anxiety prone students need additional stress relief strategies.  It is with this in mind that I will be offering lunch groups to targeted grade levels called, “Stress Busters,” a small group intervention used to respond and intervene with students who need more support and coping strategies. If you have any questions about Stress Busters or other counseling initiatives, please don’t hesitate to reach out to bletcherj@madisonnjps.org.  Best, Judy Bletcher
