    Instructional Corner:
Mrs. Smith's fifth graders have been quite busy exploring their passions through "Genius Hour" this year.  Genius Hour is not a new phenomenon but one based on empowering students to have agency in their learning path.  Students are afforded the opportunity to challenge themselves to explore a topic and create a project.  The teacher provides the time and facilitates the process, but ultimately the scope and end product is decided upon by the student.  Students have enjoyed their newfound autonomy and taken responsibility for their learning from blogging about their passions to seeing their hard work come to fruition and showcasing the end result for their classmates.  The students are eager to present to their peers over the coming weeks and likewise they are looking forward to learning from each other!  We'll share more information once the presentations have been made.  Awesome work!
    Counseling Update:

The past few weeks have been jammed packed with school wide events, one of which being a Transoptions program called, “Traffic Safety Town,” presented to our second and fourth graders.  The presenters transform the Jaguar Jungle into a 3 dimensional, lifelike, suburban town where student practice road safety. Transoptions is an organization that works in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Transportation to implement programs that make walking and bicycling around our neighborhoods and schools fun, easy, safe and healthy for all students and families.   Please check-out some of the attached photos of our second and fourth graders participation in this fun and engaging program. To learn more about Transoptions, check out https://www.transoptions.org/safe-routes-to-school.

This week I also wrapped up my fourth cycle of K-5 classroom lessons focusing on effectively using “I messages” when confronted with a conflict.  Students were given realistic scenarios, had to brainstorm Win-Win solutions and use “I messages.” They really enjoyed role-playing their “I messages” and sharing solutions to each problem with their classmates.  I encourage you to utilize the attached “I message” script at home. It’s one that your child is familiar with and a great tool to use when working through a conflict with your little one! Best, Judy Bletcher
