It's going to be a busy weekend in Madison! Tomorrow is May Day and Sunday is the MEF 5K. It's not too late to get involved in either one. Join the crew here at Torey J. from 8:30 - 11:00 A.M. For more information regarding the 5K, please visit https://www.mefnj.org/. Same-day registration will be available beginning at 8:30 a.m. on May 5, 2019 at Madison High School.
Grades 3, 4, and 5 are scheduled to begin taking the NJSLA (New Jersey Student Learning Assessment, formerly PARCC) on May 6th. Please refer to the district assessment calendar here. All testing will be completed in the morning before lunch periods. Please make sure your child arrives at school on time and having eaten breakfast on testing days. If your child arrives to school after testing has started, he/she will make up the section of the test missed during make-up days. Fifth graders will also take the NJSLA Science assessment on May 29th and May 30th.
Congratulations TJS! Last week during both lunches we collected 79 plastic baggies in one day, that is equivalent to 395 plastic baggies a week. During Zero Waste Week, we reduced our use of plastic baggies to just 101 for the whole week, which is awesome! Beginning next week we have connected with TerraCycle and will focus on collecting Little Bites packages and GoGo SqueeZ containers, which we will ship to them directly for recycling. See attached flyers for more information. While we encourage students to use reusable drink containers, TJS has also joined the Pepsi Recycle Rally and will be collecting, counting and recycling plastic water bottles. Thank you for your support with these recycling efforts.
On Thursday, May 9th, the Police Unity Tour will be passing through Madison via Woodland Road. The Madison Police Department has invited the staff and students of Torey J. to cheer on the riders at approximately 10:10 A.M. We are looking forward to providing support and encouragement!
Today marked the first day of Peer Mentoring at Torey J! It was great to see the smiling faces of more than sixty, second and fifth graders getting to know each other during lunchtime. I received a lot of positive feedback from many of the participating students and look forward to session 2 next Friday. This week I also wrapped up teaching the final steps to Win-Win, an integral part of our school-wide, conflict resolution program. Students across grade levels have had the opportunity to model and practice the Win-Win strategy with their classmates. Teachers and staff members have been encouraging students to utilize Win-Win in their classrooms, on the playground and in the cafeteria when peer conflicts arise. In upcoming news, our second, third and fourth grade Jaguar Buddies will be collecting gently used crayons to be donated, beginning next week. Please be on the lookout for more detailed information coming home soon! Best, Judy Bletcher
