We had a great "Week of Respect" at TJS! Next week, we will be kicking off our first "Read-a-Thon." Students will bring home more information on Tuesday, so be sure to check their folders. Please be reminded that school is closed on Monday, October 14th for staff professional development.Instructional Corner:Teaching writing is a complex process that builds each year upon previously learned skills. I had the fortunate opportunity to spend time with Ms. Robertson's first graders as they embarked upon their first "small moment" or "seed story." Students have been learning how to narrow the scope of their writing from big ideas to smaller, more specific ones. Young writers enjoy pulling from personal experience and using some of their favorite memories as the basis of their narratives. While it seems simple, particularly from and adult perspective, students can experience difficulty writing, as it requires synthesis of multiple skills. Ms. Robertson adeptly scaffolded the process into manageable tasks. The students are already gaining ownership of their writing and sharing in the process with their fellow writers. While the students are still in the prewriting stage, I look forward to reading their published pieces!Calendar Reminders:Schools Closed: Monday, October 14th, Columbus Day (in-service day for staff)Coffee with the Superintendent: Monday, October 14th, 7:00 P.M., MJS Media CenterBoard of Education Meeting: Tuesday, October 15th, 7:30 P.M., MHS Media CenterTJS Read-a-Thon: October 16th - 30thTJS/Madison Logo Wear Day: Friday, October 18thSchool Safety Week: October 21 - 25thInternational Dinner: Friday, October 25th, TJS Jaguar JungleHalloween Parade: Thursday, October 31st, 2:15 P.M.PTO Update:
