    Honors Advanced Art Studio (Pre-AP)

Course Description: Honors Advanced Art Studio is a junior or senior level art class designed for those students who are interested in pursuing the study of art or design at the college level. This course is also for students who exhibit a high degree of interest and/or aptitude and wish to continue to develop their artistic and design abilities for personal enrichment. Advanced Art Studio presumes an intermediate to advanced painting and drawing ability. Advanced Art Studio is a comprehensive honors art course that is predominantly studio (production) oriented, but also integrates aesthetics, art criticism, and art history as they relate to the various advanced studio projects. This course provides students with an in-depth study of drawing, painting, and two dimensional design. This course prepares the student to take the AP Studio Art course.

Materials: Required – Portfolio and Sketchbook.

Classroom Expectations: I ask that you respect yourself, your colleagues and the classroom environment. Class participation is paramount as this is a studio class. My goal for each of you is that you would grow as a visual artist creating artwork that represents your best effort and shows your individual growth over the course of the semester.

Grading Policy: Your grade will be based on the following categories - Participation, Homework, Written Assignments, Artist Statements & Critiques, Sketchbook, & Final Projects. There will be a final project at the end of the course.

Late Work & Make-up Policy: Throughout the semester, when students are absent they are expected to schedule time during their study hall, tutorial, or after school, to work on their assignments to make up for the Advanced Art Studio time they have missed. Students will receive a three day grace period beyond the due date for a project to turn the assignment in with a late penalty (deduction of 20% off grade). Projects submitted after the grace period will NOT be accepted. After the grace period has expired students may not use class time to finish their projects. It will be the student’s responsibility to obtain the necessary supplies from me to work at home, during study hall, lunch or during tutorial to finish the assignment.

Class Participation: Active class participation is essential in Honors Advanced Art Studio. Students are expected to fully utilize class time each day to work on the current assignment. Participation in class critiques is necessary as it helps students develop their ability to discuss their artwork and that of their peers.
