KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE
We discussed whether a book needs pictures? Does it need words? We read Duz Iz Tak, a book with made up language, but great illustrations, and then The Book with no Pictures.
We pondered the question: What do your toys do when you are not home? Then we read Kevin Henkes Waiting, and Emily Jenkins, Toys Meet Snow.
We participated in the Global Read Aloud and read Koala Lou, and The magic Hat, by Mem Fox. We drew an answer to the question: "If I had a magic hat, I would turn into..."
We learned that fairy tales and folk tales have come to us through the ages as an oral tradition. We practiced our retelling of story skills after a read aloud of The Little Red Hen, and then put story cards in the correct story order.
We learned about Melvil Dewey and had a lesson on how to access books in the library using call numbers. We read Bats in the Library and then did a research lesson about bats on Pebble Go. After reading Library Mouse, we each made and illustrated a tiny mouse sized book.
