Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and PARCC
Common Core State Standards Overview
In June of 2010, New Jersey adopted the Common Core State Standards, a set of academic standards, in English Language Arts and Mathematics. These standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts in the fields of language arts, mathematics and education under the guidance and support of the National Governors' Association and the Council for Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). Currently, New Jersey is one of 43 states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) that have chosen to adopt this set of standards. Madison Public Schools is in the process of continually reviewing curricula for alignment with the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
These standards will serve as important benchmarks to ensure that all students are receiving a high quality education and are well prepared for success in post-secondary education and the workforce. Students will be assessed on a regular basis throughout their school career to monitor their progress towards meeting these benchmarks by taking the PARCC assessments beginning in 2014-2015.

In addition to outlining content standards, the Common Core State Standards also outlines 8 practice standards, which focus on the development of mathematical skills and habits of mind, while describing the practices and abilities of very good mathematical thinkers. You can help your son or daughter develop these abilities by asking the questions found below as they work on assignments at home.
