ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

Community

The Borough of Madison (population 16,530) is a suburban community 25 miles west of New York City and three miles southeast of Morristown, New Jersey. Madison is primarily a middle class community with substantial tax support and extensive community involvement in school affairs.

School

Central Avenue School is one of three elementary schools in the Madison School District, serving approximately 500 students in grades Pre-K through 5. We offer a strong academic foundation, a range of enrichment opportunities, and specialized programs to support diverse learning needs. Our school is especially proud of our outstanding ABA program, Pre-K Disabilities program, and Pre-K Integrated program.

Students at Central Avenue School engage in a rich curriculum that includes Math in Focus, Reading and Writing Workshop, and TCI programs for Social Studies and Science. Our specials include Library, Computers, STEAM, Art, Physical Education, and Music. In grades four and five, students may also participate in chorus, orchestra, and band. Additionally, after-school enrichment classes are offered through the support of our active Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO).

Cooperation and character development are at the heart of everything we do. Cooperative learning strategies are implemented in every classroom, encouraging students to work together to solve problems and share knowledge. Teachers collaborate across disciplines to deliver engaging, team-based instruction in various settings—from classrooms to the stage, music and art rooms, and athletic fields. Our students live out our core values of respect, gratitude, responsibility, kindness, and acceptance, guided by our school vision: "Building a kinder, brighter future for all."

Central Avenue School has been recognized with two honors—No Place for Hate and Safe Routes to School—for our commitment to inclusivity and safety. Parents play a vital role in our school community, volunteering regularly to support classrooms, the media center, art room, cafeteria, and office. Our dedicated PTO funds special projects and leads beloved events such as International Day, the School Garden initiative, STEAM programs, the Spring Carnival, School Play, Family Fun Nights, and playground and beautification projects.

At Central Avenue School, we are committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inspiring environment where students, staff, and families grow and thrive together.

Faculty

There are over one hundred faculty members and six either part-time or shared teachers. The faculty-student ratio is approximately 12:1. We are able to achieve high honors through the hard work and dedication of our staff. Our full-time staff includes five ABA teachers, resource room teachers, special education teachers, three full-time case managers, three speech pathologists, a full-time behaviorist, three full-time occupational therapists, a librarian, a nurse, two physical education teachers, a guidance counselor, three reading and math specialists, a STEAM teacher, art teacher, an English Language Learners Teacher, and vocal and instrumental music teachers. In addition, we have over twenty full-time instructional aides.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is developed in conjunction with the NJ State Student Learning Standards. Teachers implement a reading and writing workshop, Math in Focus and TCI Social Studies and Science Program. In addition, these programs are supported by School-Wide Fundamentals, ST Math, Fundations, and many other resources. Teachers receive ongoing professional development throughout the school year on each program.
