REPORTING AN ABSENCE
You can report your child absent or tardy by calling the KRS Attendance Line at 973-593-3178 Option 1 –OR– by emailing Mrs. Hoch at hocht@madisonnjps.org.
Please state your child’s name, their teacher, and the reason your child will be absent.
For an illness: Please leave the reason your child is out sick. It is important to be as specific as possible about the details of your child’s illness– i.e., respiratory (cough, runny or stuffy nose), sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, confirmed case of flu, strep, or Covid, etc. Please avoid general comments like “doesn’t feel well" or "feeling sick” – school nurses are required to do weekly state reporting, and descriptive reasons for illness are necessary to track health trends occurring in the building.
Non-illness Related: Please give the general reason (i.e., travel or parent request, etc.)

Returning to school after illness:
Students should be fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
If your child has vomited, they should not have vomited for at least 24 hours and should be eating a regular diet. If your child has an unknown cause of diarrhea, it should be resolved before returning to school.
If your child has been diagnosed with strep throat, he or she needs to be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school.
If your child was diagnosed with pink eye, a medical note clearing them to return to school is required.
The Exclusion List from the New Jersey Department of Health can be found here.
You know your child best! If your doctor clears your child to return to school, it does not necessarily mean they are fully ready. Please ensure their energy levels have returned to normal and they have been eating their regular diet for 24 hours before sending them back.
