With a generous grant from the Kirby Foundation, the GLIAH provided curriculum targeted, content-driven professional development for teachers in the Humanities and Special Education Departments throughout the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years. The "Teaching Literacy Through History Program" brings scholars from major universities throughout the Northeast to Madison for a half-day lecture and discussion around topics selected by the faculty. The afternoon session features work with primary documents aimed at helping teachers develop stronger literacy skills in their classrooms. Here are the topics of professional development so far:

2015-16 School Year Topics:

  • Turn of the 20th Century Immigration

  • Harlem Renaissance and the Jazz Age

  • Civil Rights Movement/1960s

2016-17 School Year Topics:

  • American Demagogues

  • Gender and Sexuality in the 20th Century

  • American Art and Literature in the Antebellum Era
