Madison High School has been named an "Affiliate School" by The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. As an affiliate member the MHS History Department will enjoy the following benefits:

• Access to an affiliates section of the Gilder Lehrman website with resources for teachers divided into eight historical eras. Each era includes scholarly articles, lesson plans, document-based questions including the original articles, podcasts, and how-to's.

• Personalized consulting services from GLI education coordinators including templates and technical assistance for Saturday history programs, guidance and materials for history clubs, and advice on grant opportunities.

• Priority access to professional development opportunities, including summer seminars and invitations to forums and events in your area.

• Themed sets of documents and high-resolution PDF's from the Gilder Lehrman Collection, an archive of more than 60,000 rare historical manuscripts.

With a generous grant from the Kirby Foundation, the GLIAH provided curriculum targeted, content-driven professional development for teachers in the Humanities and Special Education Departments throughout the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years. The "Teaching Literacy Through History Program" brings scholars from major universities throughout the Northeast to Madison for a half-day lecture and discussion around topics selected by the faculty. The afternoon session features work with primary documents aimed at helping teachers develop stronger literacy skills in their classrooms. Here are the topics of professional development so far:
