PLAYWRIGHTS THEATRE

The Madison Public Schools have enjoyed a long relationship with The Playwrights Theatre. From Playwriting residencies to Poetry Out Loud, they have offered our students a wide variety of creative opportunities. Some of these collaborations include:

  • High School Playwriting Residency: For 12 weeks, selected high school English classes to work with a professional playwright to create their own plays. The plays-in-progress are acted out, discussed and improvised as the students learn to effectively give and receive feedback. The residency culminates in a public performance of student plays by professional actors.

  • Young Playwrights Workshop: Students at all three elementary schools work with professional teaching artists to write their own plays. An annual festival of representative plays is held at Playwrights Theatre with professional actors and directors.

  • Poetry Out Loud: This annual, statewide, the competition involves the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theatre. The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts to bring this program to schools across New Jersey. This exciting program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage. Playwrights Theatre provides a poet and performance artist to work with high school students on interpreting and delivering poetry.
