Dear MPS Community,

On May 2, the Madison Board Education approved Dr. Johanna Ruberto to serve as the Interim Chief School Administration (CSA) effective July 1, 2023 potentially for a one year term. Dr. Ruberto is an experienced educator who has served as a classroom teacher for 15 years, a principal at both the elementary and middle school levels, assistant superintendent with a focus in curriculum, instruction and professional development, and a superintendent. Above all else Dr. Ruberto prides herself on putting children first and looks forward to the opportunity to get into our schools and learn more about our district. She is also communicating with Mr. Schwarz in preparation for finding an interim assistant superintendent to replace Dr. Frank Santora who accepted a position as the new superintendent in Roxbury on May 8.  We want to thank Dr. Santora for his work in the district both as our Assistant Superintendent and as the Head of Special Services.. We wish him the best of luck as he advances in his career.

Dr. Ruberto, who served as an interim Superintendent in five other districts across the state since 2015, has expertise in transition planning and has already begun to work with Mr. Schwarz and the Board to develop a plan uniquely fitted to Madison. The Board is excited to have the opportunity for our district to benefit from her experience while she is here.

Additionally, the Board approved a request for proposal (RFP) for an Executive Search Firm with a deadline for submission by May 24th. The Board plans to review these proposals with the goal of approving a firm at the June 20 Board meeting. Once a firm is hired we will begin our search in earnest. We anticipate ample opportunities for parents, community members, teaching staff and school administrators to play roles in the selection process through surveys and direct participation.  All updates about the process will be posted on the Superintendent Search page on the district website.

Finally, we want to invite the community to attend the Superintendent Coffee on Monday, May 22 and the Board of Education meeting on June 20th, which will be Mr. Schwarz’s last in the district.

Sincerely,

The Madison Board of Education
