ABOUT OUR PRINCIPAL

Thomas Liss is excited to be entering his eleventh year as the principal of Central Avenue Elementary School and his twenty-fourth year as an educator. While at CAS, Mr. Liss has brought many different programs, such as the Learning Garden, Project Fit America, Leveled Literacy Intervention, Reading Recovery, various special education programs, various intervention programs, an after-school enrichment program, art residency, sensory garden, curricular changes, and much more.

Mr. Liss joined Madison Fifteen years ago as Assistant Principal at the Junior School. Previous to that role, he was an Assistant Principal at Oak Street Elementary School in the Bernards Township District. In addition, he was a K-12 District Supervisor of Social Studies in Bernards Township, supervised the gifted and talented program, instructional support programs, observed and evaluated K-12 staff, provided professional development to staff and parents, and worked with basic skills teachers. Previous to his roles in administration, he was a teacher at the middle and elementary levels, coached track and field, was the student council advisor at the middle school, and mentor of numerous new teachers and new administrators. All of these experiences have given him an appreciation of the whole child and how important the school community can be in promoting change that enables students to be successful.

Mr. Liss grew up in New Providence and has many family members that reside in the Madison area. Currently, he lives in Berkeley Heights, NJ with his wife Michele (Who is a Reading Specialist). They have two boys, Michael (16 years old) and Vincent (13 years old) who play a wide array of sports that keep them very busy. While not at CAS, he has season tickets for the New York Jets, likes the Yankees, fishing, traveling, playing sports, and visiting his parents’ homes at the Jersey Shore and on Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos.

As always, Mr. Liss is looking forward to continuing to work with all stakeholders to provide a strong learning community where students can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Please feel free to contact him if you have any questions or have any concerns!

Optimistically,

Thomas Liss
